This site brings together two documents, published here as four parts.

Parts I and II — the eBook

Written for the photographer.

Part I — Theory explains how noise is generated in a photograph, what ISO invariance actually is, how to identify it in your own camera, and how to combine it with Exposing To The Right (ETTR).

Part II — Applications brings real examples, from moonset timelapses over Christ the Redeemer to eclipses and astrophotography under heavy light pollution, each with the capture settings and the processing that followed.

Parts III and IV — the Technical Appendix

A deep dive into the data and the physics, considerably more technical.

Part III — Noise Model and Technical Foundations is the numerical model behind all of it: read noise, PRNU, photon noise, SNR, dynamic range, dual conversion gain, and the dark-noise components that appear in long exposures.

Part IV — Numerical Analysis by Camera applies that method to specific bodies from Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Canon, Panasonic, Leica, OM System, Hasselblad and Pentax, using measurements published by Photons to Photos.

The Appendix is not required to apply the techniques described in the eBook. It is where those techniques are proven.
